BIL Lesson 6

“Man’s Need of a Mediator”

1.     What in human history reveals that universal man recognizes that he has no standing with Deity?

2.     Give a description of man’s standing before God after his sin. Give scripture.

3.     Why did man need a mediator?

·       Mediator-a person who attempts to make people involved in a conflict come to an agreement; a go-between.

4.     What were the means of approach unto God that were given to Adam and his family?

·       Gen 3:21 (God clothed them)

·       Gen 4:4 (Cain and Abel brought sacrifices and portions of their possessions to Him)

5.     What did the incident in Leviticus 10:1-3 reveal to Israel?

6.     Explain the two other incidents in the life of Israel that show man’s need of a Mediator?

·       Korah’s rebellion (Numbers 16)

·       1 Samuel 6:

In 1 Samuel Chapter 6, the Ark of the Covenant has been in Philistine hands for seven months and they are suffering from it being in their presence. They wish to send it back. Their priests tell them if they send the Ark back to the Israelites, they should not send it empty but send a guilt offering along with it.

Discussing the Guilt Offering

When asked what sort of guilt offering should be sent back, the priests suggest five gold rats and gold tumors because tumors and rats are plaguing their country and there are five Philistine rulers. This might propitiate the God of Israel. The priests warn the Philistines not to harden their hearts the way that the Egyptians did.

Cows to Pull the Ark

The priest directed the Philistines to use two cows to pull a cart with the Ark of the Covenant on it. These cows must have had given birth but never pulled a wagon. Then, the Philistines were to put a chest with the gold tumors and rats in it beside the Ark, send it back and watch what happens.

If the cart goes back toward the Israelites, it means that God had indeed cursed the Philistines. If it goes somewhere else, the Philistines would know that their misfortune was simple chance.

Following the Ark

The Philistines watch the cows and see the cart as it goes toward Israelite territory. The Philistines follow to the boundary of a place called Beth Shemesh. The people there are working in the wheat fields and when they see the cart with the Ark on it, they rejoice. When the cart finally stops they sacrifice the cows and chop up the cart. The Philistine rulers see this.

Punishment for Peeking

The Israelites put the ark on a boulder, but the Lord kills 70 of the men because they peeked into the Ark when they were not authorized to do so. The people mourn but still praise the Lord. They send a message to the people of Kiriath Jearim telling them that the Ark had returned and to come and get it.

7.     How did Job voice man’s need of a Mediator?

8.     Explain the scripture in Jeremiah that showed man’s need of a Mediator.

·       Jer 30:21 “Jeremiah realized that no man had a right to stand in God’s presence, nor power to do it, and he tells us that there is one being who will be able to draw near” a prophecy.

9.     The requirements of a Mediator for man are the following:

·       Must be man.

·       Must be able to sympathize with the temptations of mankind.

·       Must be righteous

·       Must not be a subject of Satan

10.  How could man’s need of a Mediator be met?
