BIL Lesson 9

“God’s Covenant People”

In Lesson 8 we talked about God’s covenant with Abraham, now we are going to talk about how God kept his covenant with Abraham, through keeping it with his descendants, which were the Israelites.

1.     Explain the place, geographically, that the Israelites held as a witness.

a.     Palestine was located geographically so that the ancient civilizations had to pass through it in order to do business with other countries. God’s people were to be a witness to them of who the true God was.

2.     Give a brief character sketch of Isaac, Jacob, and Joseph.

a.     Isaac had a gentle, and quiet spirit and is known for his love for his wife Rebecca.

b.     Jacob, on the other hand, was crooked, and selfish, and shrewd. Steals his brother’s birthright, lies to his Father, fights with God, BUT he is proof that God can take even the most hard-headed people and straighten them out and use them.

c.      Joseph was sold as a slave into Egypt when he was 17, at the age of 30 he became ruler over Egypt, second only to Pharaoh himself, and saved his family.

3.     How did God use Joseph to preserve his people?

a.     To save His covenant people from destruction during the famine that was sweeping the land of Canaan, God brought his people into Egypt so they could thrive and multiply.

                                               i.     Gen 45:6-7

4.     Describe the life of the Israelites in Egypt before their persecution.

a.     The children thrived among the ease and abundance in Egypt. They were favored settlers who held honorable and well-paid positions under the Egyptian kings.

                                               i.     In the 210 years, their numbers had increased from 70 to over 3 million.

ii.     But that favor and abundance didn’t last forever. Remember how we talked about that verse in Genesis that was this prophecy about how Satan was coming after the “seed of woman” who was Jesus and the way he did that was to try and stop the righteous line who were known as the “seed of Abraham”.

5.     Who caused the statesman of Egypt to oppress the children of Israel? Why did he do this?

a.     Satan did this. He put fear and intimidation into the hearts of the leaders of Egypt because the Israelites were such a massive group of people. The Egyptians began to fear that if Egypt were to go to war with another nation, the Israelites would side with their enemies.

b.     He did all this to stop the righteous line-to stop the Messiah from coming

6.     Upon what were based the hiding of Moses by his parents and his later renunciation of Egypt?

a.     Renouncing Egypt meant saying “You are not my people, I am not one of you.” These two things were based upon faith.

                                               i.     Hebrews 11:23-27

7.     Why did God come down to deliver the Israelites?

a.     To manifest Himself as the covenant-keeping God and as a miracle-working God.

8.     Why did God seek to kill Moses?

a.     Because he had not circumcised his son. It was to show us again, how important that blood covenant is.

9.     Who were involved in the mighty conflict that took place in the deliverance of Israel from Egypt?

a.     On one side you have Pharaoh and all the wealth and power of Egypt and on the other side you have Moses and Aaron.

                                               i.     “Two slaves demanding liberty not for themselves, but for three million people-demanding it again and again after repeated refusal from Pharaoh.

10.  Why was it that God had to humble Pharaoh?

a.     Because he and all the Egyptians thought he was God.
