BIL Lesson 10

“The Deliverance from Egypt”

1.     Show how Scriptural account gives to us a true picture of ancient Egyptian life.

a.     Historians and the Bible agree that: Pharaoh held a great deal of authority, that the Egyptian priesthood were magicians who were considered very powerful, the Egyptians used bricks made of stubble instead of straw during that time period.

2.     What was the first miracle that was performed in Pharaoh’s presence?

a.     The rod turned into a serpent when it was cast down

3.     What spiritual significance may be given to it?

a.     Because Aaron’s snake swallowed up the other snakes, it proved that God’s power is greater than that of Satan’s.

b.     Some people wonder why the magician’s rods turned into snakes also, but notice that the Bible never claims that Satan has no real power. Remember that Adam gave his authority to Satan when he sinned, but the good news is that God’s power always trumps Satan’s so we as people of God don’t need to fear the power of Satan.

4.     In what way did the first plague bring down judgement upon an Egyptian God?

a.     The first plague was when the waters turned to blood which was God showing he was more powerful than NU the god of the Nile and to punish the Egyptians for casting the babies into the Nile.

5.     What was the second plague and it’s significance?

a.     Frogs. Egyptians often prayed to a goddess called HEKI to rid themselves of frogs. This second plague shows again, that God is more powerful than the Egyptian gods.

6.     As Pharaoh refuses, show how the afflictions become greater.

a.     The first sign of the serpent didn’t really harm anyone. The first and second plague didn’t necessarily harm anyone, but the plagues of lice and flies affect their bodies and their possessions. Then their cattle get sick which would be their source of food and income, then they get painful boils so they are experiencing actual physical pain,

7.     How did the ninth plague reveal His mercy before the last plague came?

a.     Darkness. Each man was shut in. Everything was shut down so they had a moment to think about what they were doing or what Pharaoh was doing.

b.     God was also showing how he had power over the sun which was attacking another Egyptian god: Ra.

8.     In what way did God give evidence of His fidelity to the covenant?

a.     God had the Israelites shed blood (of a lamb) and put it over their doors to symbolize the Blood Covenant, so that God could show them he was going to keep his promise to Abraham which was the first time that the blood covenant was made.

9.     Describe the effect of the tenth plague.

a.     Killing of the first-born. “There was a great cry in Egypt; for there was not a house where there was not one dead.”

b.     This plague was also significant because even Pharaoh, whom the Egyptians worshipped as a god, was affected by this plague so it showed that he had no real power.

10.  How was it is revealed that the plagues were sent by the Covenant God?

a.     No one who made the Blood Covenant was harmed by the tenth plague.

b.     Egyptians are promptly freed after that plague.
